This package comes lowest on the priority scale for everything we
have. Currently, the unity session option is broken in UGR because of
GNOME 3. This package exists to give people choice.

Unity works as a layer over GNOME. If the session option doesn't load
it, it won't load.

As for ubuntu speed, ubuntu has a lot of extra services, daemons, and
such that slow down the system. Ever tried the livecd head to head
against the debian livecd?  Debian is much faster.
