I just figured out that if you clic on Thunderbird icon in messaging-
menu (and not on the notification) everything is OK : Thunderbird pops
up.

  clicking on the mailboxcounter for a mailbox in Thunderbird doesn't
  open window

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 13.04

  if there are new messages in Thunderbird, they are shown in the
  indicator with the corresponding mailbox(folder) but if clicking on
  that mailbox in indicator nothing happens, but it should take me to
  the mailbox with the new mail and select the first new unread mail.
