Re: Notify OSD: Talk about giving the user preferences

While I appreciate the work that is being done to determine a position
for the notifications that is suitable for most users, I feel that
really this default should be just that. There should be some way
(through gconf-editor if need be) that the position can be altered
away from the default.

There are several reasons for this, the most obvious one is that not
all people like the notifications in the same location, each user is
different after all. But also, with the entire GNOME desktop being
largely configurable, with panels that can be docked at any side,
window buttons that can be relocated etc. the default position will
not be suitable 100% of the time for 100% of the users, it simply
cannot be - nothing is that simple unfortunately. However, my main
reason for asking (begging?) for some kind of configuration of
position is that some people with problems with their vision need this
kind of configuration. In a bug report (forum post?) I was reading
recently (I can't find it now) there was a user who couldn't see the
notifications in their new location because of his poor peripheral
vision, but he was unable to restore the old location.

I personally would prefer the notifications at the lower right of the
screen so they don't cover the FF search box while I'm typing, others
have been pleased with the new location in the middle and many loved
the old location. Some kind of option for configuring this would
please everyone. Would patches be accepted for this kind of change?

Luke.
