As Mads mention it in the comments the idea for OS switcher was already
mocked up by the UX team. 
You might try contacting Mat Tomaszewski.

And David Barth did mention that the redundant kernel names are to be
addressed. 

So these are something they already have plans to fix , you might try
asking contacting them if there has been any progress.
