no apologism for Single Clicking..
Let's walk down the road confidently!

Checkboxes are my favourite Solution, they have an obvious meaning and
fit consistently in all view modes and are not semantically ambiguous
as symbols or "+" signs would be.
Perhaps make them look nice ;)
