Definitely a checkbox (as a starting point for testing). As you said,
the "+" is ambiguous.
The actual behaviour will probably need some fine-tuning. For example,
if I select 5 folders using the checkboxes and accidentally click on the
6th, thereby opening it, will those folders still be selected when I
return from my errant navigation? Also, how would I deselect all? (That
could be a menu option, but should probably also have a keyboard
shortcut.)
