 I think you're right about the menu problem, it's solvable. As for favicons, I 
don't know, maybe it could be a miniature version of the icon on the left panel, 
with the same background color, or perhaps just the icon. Perhaps it might not 
be very pretty to see, or be too much stuff (with the app launcher and the 
close, minimize and maximize buttons on the left) .I don't know. As for being 
small, in browser tabs, the favicons are very small, but I always know which tab 
is the yahoo one, or facebook one..

That would be a problem with some applications, but it should be "easily"
solved with a style guide and patch, right?

The ones I'm using daily do not seem to have the application name at the top
of the first menu item, so I think it would not be a common problem.

A favicon might be neat in addition to the application name.  The problem is
that favicons are small and not always evocative of the application.
