sorry.. forgot to add:
there was an initiative before lucid i guess.. to give ubuntu a simple photo
manager, i.e. the "Simple" equivalent to Simple Scan..

i see something about a "Simple integrated graphics editor".. perhaps that's
a thread to follow in this respect..
