OK, as this troubled me too much, I filed a bug:

("very hard to distinguish/select text documents in the expose window 
spread")

this bug is now tagged as "needs-design", so if anyone from you likes to 
demonstrate his/her design skills... ;-)

(reminder: here is the problem: http://ubuntuone.com/p/hSh/ selecting 
there from with a direct hit is very hard...)
