If we want the dash to fit in with the user's color palette, why not have it use the gtk theme? 

That would be just as customizable, and also opens the possibility of having a contrast from the desktop and the dash.

Also, using the background color makes the dash seem really out of place when opened over a maximized window.

To me, using the gtk theme makes more sense -- the background is a photograph, an I appreciate color. However, for something I interact with, I would like a more subtle use of color.

Also, it would save you from having to determine legible foreground colors, as that would be handled by the gtk then as well.

Despite these minor concerns, I greatly appreciate the work you've done on unity.
