Message #08838
"Show Desktop" is not an application
Hi,
Something I run into a few times a week is that, as I use Alt-Tab to
switch applications, I accidentally select the "Show Desktop" item.
What happens next is that *all* my windows have been minimized on all
(five) workspaces and I have to go an individually bring them all back
into play. In addition to being annoying, it also seems odd that
"Show Desktop" is somehow a special "application" that should be in
the Alt-Tab list. Why isn't "Show Dash" also there, for example?
I have some suggestions to improve the situation:
[1]
Remove "Show Desktop" from the Alt-Tab list. Instead, we can use
Ctrl-Alt-d to show/hide our windows. For mouse-driven users, add the
"Show Desktop" icon back to the Launcher. If the plan is (still) to
get rid of workspaces, by default, then it could even take the place
of the workspace switching button.
[2]
Less desirable, but only minimize the windows on the current
workspace, instead of on all of them. This way at least an accidental
"Show Desktop" invocation doesn't make me have to go to all my
workspaces and bring things back to life. Also, in general, I want
things I do on the current workspace to be contained there. I wonder
if that attitude should be used to inform these kinds of design
patterns?
Thanks,
J.
