It sounds a good idea but what if, for example, one had a new email
AND a new chat message?
How would the messaging menu know which one you are wanting to respond to?

Might work better if you could reply in that way via the menu item,
rather than the main indicator icon.

Also, with the frequent changes unity undergoes, I don't think the
behaviour of the left-click should be altered since users would expect
it to open the menu.
Maybe reverse the controls so right-click or middle-click does the
more advanced stuff.

Though I'm sure I read some time ago that it was the intention that
all clicks would do the same thing regarding the indicators?
