Yes.  I actually do *not* want remote storage because I travel
frequently and I want to read and answer email even when I do not have
internet connection.  This is one of most disturbing things of GNUs.

Re. speed, maybe with new hardware it is less annoying, but I think it
is impossible to have the same speed as a maildir-based system.  There
is also a problem with the maximum buffer size: as every mailbox is a
single file for VM, with today's attachment-bloated email, they can
reach that limit pretty fast.

One interesting capability of GNUS is to save an attachment and
substituting it by the mail a reference to where you have saved it.  If
one is consistent as to where things are saved (I try to be) and you do
not move things around, then the attachment can be seamlessly recovered
from the email where it came in the first place.

Again, if I switched to GNUs was because at some point it was very
difficult for me to work with VM, and it was not effortless.
