Tara would be a solution, but it conflicts with my general update plan.

I am not so keen on building it up from scratch either.

....However, I've just seen in the Changelog that the ability to hide
the pads from the taskbar came already in 4.6. I mistakenly assumed I
will need at least 5.0+ for the feature!

Since for 4.9 the changelog claims:

"Fix: Deprecated functions - Replaced gtk_menu_popup with
gtk_menu_popup_at_pointer"

I assumed that the GTK requirements ramped up at this point and
installed 4.8.
