Arthur Borsboom proposed the following answer:
Sometimes Xpad starts too fast and the taskbar of the DE (XFCE) might not
be loaded yet. You can test this by starting Xpad manually from the command
line (after you are sure Xpad is not running). If it does show the tray
icon by manually starying, you might try to add a delay of 1 or 2 seconds
for Xpad. Xpad has a possibility for this in the preferences.
