Thought to comment out the version line in the configure.ac and run the autogen.sh
Got the errors

$ ./autogen.sh

+ autoreconf --force --install
autoreconf: configure.ac: AM_GNU_GETTEXT is used, but not AM_GNU_GETTEXT_VERSION

configure.ac:56: installing './config.guess'
configure.ac:56: error: required file './config.rpath' not found

autoreconf: automake failed with exit status: 1
