You may start experimenting git based on the instructions here (website
down atm :-/ ):

Perhaps create your own branch for a start, then we can give you access
to the main development branch when you know the basic operations.

Basically, you modify sources on your HD, then upload modified files to
trunk with a few "git" commands.

The doc you mentionned earlier (user.html#controlling-simulation) is
written in the source file doc/sphinx/user.rst
