To make the answer short: no, the size of particles does not matter, but
the number N of particles is the important parameter.
So, multiplying the size of the sample by 10 and the size of particles by 10 (same N) is useless.
However, a triaxial test with N=1000 is faster than N=10e6, of course (see Jan's explanations).
