check the link you mention).
I don't know how you manipulated git to achieve that. We can discuss
your workflow if needed.
In any case, please always check what you will commit before effectively
commiting to avoid such things.

This would have shown the problem:
git diff py/_utils.cpp

Can you restore the function?
