You can uninstall Unity Desktop to be able to compile Yade smoothly, after Yade is up and running, you can reinstall Unity Desktop, don't worry.
Beside Unity you can try GNome classic, XFCE, KDE.
Be careful when you remove the conflict package concerning the display utility, there's great chance that when you remove some display packages, xserver-xorg will be deleted, that will be a nuisance; especially when your PC uses NVidia Graphic Card.
I'm curious about your reason of keeping Unity-Desktop, is it that great?
