I think velGrad=Matrix3(0,sin(theta),0, -sin(theta),0,0, 0,0,0) is correct asymptoticaly for small spin*dt.
If you really need a large rotation in one step, I'm afraid it is not possible currently (Jan's trick sounds good, except that the particles will not be rotated - it could be implemented).
