Good to know, but... I think your algorithm will not work combined with Jan's idea #1 because it still assumes a velocity gradient incremented over many small timesteps (this is also a requirement for equating rotation and cross product).
Your spin definition is only ok with #2 (are you sure about the W/2, why not just W?).
