on thing to add:
I am using the nvidia-331 driver. But I also tried nouveau driver, which did not help.
I reinstalled the nvidia-331 driver

Occasionally some errors like these 2 here occur:
 
Yade [2]: QGLFormat::setSamples: Cannot have negative number of samples per pixel -2303275
QColor::setRgbF: RGB parameters out of range

Yade [2]: QGLFormat::setSamples: Cannot have negative number of samples per pixel -1
QColor::setRgbF: RGB parameters out of range
