Jérôme Duriez proposed the following answer:
Hi,

It seems to me you try to identify
* macroscopic values such as the peak or residual friction angle as observed in a triaxial test on a sample, or the repose angle of another sample
* to microscopic values such as the friction angle at the contact between two discrete elements.

This is *not* possible in DEM. The macroscopic friction angle as
observed e.g. at peak or residual states during triaxial compressions
depends of other things than the microscopic friction angle assigned in
YADE (or any DEM code) between two elements.

The first example that comes to my mind is the figure 3.19 of
[Chareyre2003] (see https://yade-dem.org/doc/references.html). No need
to understand french to get the figure's meaning: the local friction
angle (between two DE) is on the x-axis while the macroscopic friction
angle (the one observed during triaxial test, at peak state)is on the
y-axis.

It is clear from the Figure that for one given local friction angle, you
can get different macro friction angles (i.e. different Mohr-Coulomb
internal friction angles), depending e.g. from the porosity.
