Unfortunately, even with a timestep equal to 1e-9, I get the same
behavior (explosion)... In addition, I now get this at the first
iteration and at different iteration before the explosion:

CHOLMOD warning: matrix not positive definite
something went wrong in Cholesky factorization, use LDLt as fallback this time1

I get the same behavior with yadedaily and yade2017.

I must be doing something wrong.
