Hi,
I confirm Robert's answer #1. 
You better start from an understanding of current implementation. You then find out how to modify it to your liking. Finally,  find the way to make it optional (we can discuss details in yade-dev list if you need - and if you join) so that your change can safely be pushed to github - provided there is a rational for it.
