[Question #680130]: reconstructed 3D volume to DEM

New question #680130 on Yade:
https://answers.launchpad.net/yade/+question/680130

Hi All,

My question might be off but its related to Yade.

I'm trying to model a porous media that is very heterogeneous random pore shapes. I have a real sample that I scanned in X-ray computed tomography and obtained a stack of 2D images then using image processing, I reconstructed a 3D volume of the sample as seen in this image (https://drive.google.com/open?id=12f0BrIsHsDJhfR6nzwUcNXa9VxTeZQZV).

Do you think its possible to convert this 3D model to an STL or GTS file and import it to Yade then fill the solid part of the volume by spheres? The reason I want to do this is to get a volume that has the exact same pore structure as the real sample while the solid is filled with spheres and I can run DEM analysis in Yade. I'm not sure if this idea is realistic, so please give me some recommendations or if you have other suggestions please let me know.

Thanks,

Othman
