Yes, DEM is expensive.. there are several option you can try:
- improve current polyhedrons implementation
- try different shapes, like PFacet, PotentialParticle or PotentialBlock
- try totally different method (some event-driven particle simulation
- try different software

In any of the cases, I have no idea how much you can gain..
