Bug description:
  Missing keyword args from several raise exception calls

  I found several places in the code where calls to raise exceptions do
  not supply the appropriate keyword args. This might mean that an
  exception would not be raised correctly, or perhaps produce a
  misleading message.

  Patch to follow shortly.
