this bug is very old and a lot has changed since it was filed.

* Dropping xml support
* api validation
* API tests to make sure they don't change etc.

Bug description:
  Extensions are being used to implement core functionality, e.g. SSH
  key management.  But there are no XML schema files for them, which
  makes them difficult to use from strongly-typed languages.
