I'll pick up this problem and run with it today, just to see where I
get. I expect I'll be bringing someone else along with me for the ride
at some point...

It's clear that our approach of "everything subunit > stdout;
everything else > stderr" was hopelessly naïve. What I'm not sure
about is _why_ it was hopelessly naïve, exactly.

Well, we did say that our solution was too easy...
