Doh! emacs newb mistake on my part.

Solution is to include

(load "zeitgeist") to your .emacs file

Bug description:
  I installed the zeitgeist-datasource-emacs package, but it does not
  appear to have been logging anything to zeitgeist.

  Steps to reproduce, install zeitgeist-datasource-emacs from PPA

  Use emacs

  Expected result, emacs is tracked in gnome activity journal

  actual result, emacs use is not tracked.
