While I agree it's a cool idea, I have doubts on it being frequent.
aggregating contact information from as many available sources as possible is very helpful in a multi "service" environment, since our communication is primarily based on addressing individuals or groups of individuals.
while a horizontal contact list itself alone might not be the best solution, the idea of harvesting person-related information and history from whichever app has it on my desktop would be in concurrence with what Zeitgeist already does for processes, my activities and my favourite files and folderst etc.
i would like to read more discussion on this, but i'm not sure if Ayatana is the place, since it has more to do with social communication than with interface communication..
