Re: [Ayatana] Work by project

Hi,
I have made a two news mockups.
The first is the overview with a new menu  to manage projects.
You can to drag and drop a project to the workspace you want.

The second is a fullscreen mockup with a project activated.
http://nsa15.casimages.com/img/2010/05/02/100502065741947598.png
For each project, you have a widget full of files who belong to the activated project.
I add an other widget, a mix between GAJ and Sezen, for a quickly access to files in time.
I covered all the desktop because If you work on a project, you don't have to use desktop.
But I don't like very much this idea, and the desktop is a little bit dark.

So I made a third mockup here, with one desktop-folder for each projects:
http://nsa14.casimages.com/img/2010/05/03/100503101939790053.png
And the sezen dock can be hide.

I have made a lot of mockups, and each time I regret that a project management doesn't already exist. ;)

Thanks for the listening

Thanks for explanations.

I already know GAJ, I think it's a very good time traveler.
GAJ is powerful standalone software, but I think we need a more little application, with a panel integration in Gnome-Shell. I just discovered Sezen, thanks to your links, and it exceeds my expectations, because we can filter by sort of files, and go back in time directly from the desk. And if we can add labels to files or attach them to a project, it will be a powerful features for GAJ and Sezen. It's good to see what we can expect for an integration in Gnome-Shell.

A project management is important to me, because many people, including me, work like that. Many applications add a project management directly in their interfaces to compensate this lack in file managers. I think we can extend this mode of organization to the workspace.

An other thought, I haven't test yet, and I don't know if it's already exist, but can we add a quickly access to folders for each files. Most of the time, when we search a file, we want also open the files next to it.

Thanks
kao

Hi Kao,

these are great observations and design mock-ups! Thanks!

Did you already check out GNOME Activity Journal?

https://launchpad.net/gnome-activity-journal

http://seilo.geekyogre.com/

http://velourdrome.blogspot.com/

What you sketched in your mail matches some of the goals we’re heading for with the GNOME Activity Journal and related user interfaces.

We are currently working on labeling the event data coming from the Zeitgeist database/log, Zeitgeist being the engine, which feeds the GNOME Activity Journal (GAJ):

https://launchpad.net/zeitgeist

https://launchpad.net/zeitgeist-project

http://zeitgeist-project.com/

With “time-expanded” labels, we’ll be able to relate project labels/tags to the event data, which will in the future be aggregated into activity data. Basic item-related activities are modeled by start and end events. Those basic activities can then be grouped and referred to by concepts as projects as you lay-outed below.

If you’re interested in learning more about the GAJ and Zeitgeist projects, join in on our IRC channels

GAJ:

#gnome-zeitgeist on GIMPnet

Zeitgeist:

#zeitgeist on freenode

Cheers,

Thorsten, on behalf of the Zeitgeist team

Betreff: [Ayatana] Work by project

hi everybody,

I originally posted this proposition on the Gnome-Shell mailing list, but someone suggested me to do the same here.

I have searched a way to get a best organization of my work.

Actually in my job, I install a new machine.
For this, I have stored up documents, hyperlinks,  installation scripts,  and manufacturer contacts.
If I have done a good job, I will never work again on this machine.
But most of the time, 6 month later, my Boss will say to me: 'Hey! can you upgrade this machine and make it do the coffee now, please'
I will be glad, if I can find again all my  project documents in one box by a simple click.

I think we can handle our work by projects, and groups of projects.
A project, it's a sort of basket where we can put what we need: files, Folders, contacts, hyperlinks, applications.
-We can rename it, suppress it, save it, restore it, merge it to others.
-We use only shortcuts.

At work, at home I work by projects.
-I am in charge of the printers inventory of my company
-I have to rebuild the contacts database  of my office
-I search the best tv world for my new home.
-I make a beautiful mockup for Gnome3

And I do Activities like:
-Listen music
-Watch movies
-surf the web

I like the idea of project and I think, it's can be a good partner of "Activities".

We can already manage projects with many folders, and many shortcuts, but  you need a very big sense of organization.
I think we can change the approach of the workspace to make it more easier.

I made a first mockup, I took the idea that a desktop couldn't be  a folder in fullscreen.

I add also three timelines to get an quickly access in time to files, contacts, and folders.
The time, with Zeitgeist, will be a big component of the new Gnome3.
http://nsa15.casimages.com/img/2010/04/26/100426022404679486.png

I made also a second mockup here
http://nsa14.casimages.com/img/2010/04/29/100429085821394270.png
It's show, how we can manage projects with workspace directly from the overview.

I am not a good designer, but I hope that you understand the idea behind this drawing.

The first discussion was here:

Thanks for the listening.
