Message #00000
Welcome!
Hi everyone,
I've just started the mailing list for this team. ausimage and I had a
quick phone call to find out what he has been working on and we
decided to kick this off on the mailing list. Here's the short
summary.
* Lars Wirzenius is working on zsync for karmic, that is, delta
upgrades for apt.
* This handles the "your LAN to the internet" traffic problem
* It would be nice if on top of that we provided a local solution for
LANs that would save outgoing bandwidth on top of the zsync savings
for:
* Home networks
* Universities, businesses, etc.
* People and countries with metered bandwidth
* Fixing apt-zeroconf would be a nice summer project for LoCos.
* It's all just a bunch of python.
* Nodes on a network can just autodiscover themselves and serve each
other packages
* what happens when a node shuts down mid-transfer?
* Security?
* Jeremy needs someone who knows python-apt so we can share code/use
as a library
* Jorge needs to know what hackers need, can work docs, translations,
getting volunteers, finding packagers.
* Need hackers to tell me what is missing so I can find
subject-matter-experts to answer questions.
* Project is here: https://launchpad.net/apt-zeroconf
* People encouraged to dig in, get started.
* Encourage use of mailing lists to coordinate work.
* HAVE FUN!
