No Sound/Audio control

Under Ubuntu 9.10 I have no sound or audio control. There is no speaker
icon in the notification area and when I go to
System->Preferences->Sound I get a message that says "Waiting for sound
system to respond". Has anyone had this problem with their Asus UL80vt?
Anyone have a solution? Thanks for the help.
