Hallo, I finally had some time to tinker and decided to try and use the nvidia card with its proprietary drivers. 

I read that by changing the bios setting Sata from enhanced to compatible it was possible to get the card working. 

First I installed the nvidia-current package (I'm using ubuntu lucid 32 bit) and added the line 

BusID     "PCI1:0:0"

to xorg.conf in the nvidia device section

rebooted changed the bios setting and ... ... ... 

No Luck ...
