The live cd actually tries to run the kernel during the installation
process. The alternate cd does not. There are two methods of installing
Ubuntu. One uses a text-based installer to run the installation
process. It does not need to be able to use your graphics card, sound
card, and most hardware.

The desktop cd uses Ubiquity to install. It does need your graphics
card, and hardware to work with it. It is a GUI based installer, thus
does not use the same processes to run.

The fact that one installer will run but the other won't means there is
a bug in the installer that did not run. That is not necessarily a
kernel bug, but it is an installer bug.

If the person can use the live cd, it is an installer bug. If the
person is unable to get to the live desktop, which is the actual
Operating System running without having installed it, it is not the
installer.

A standard response for the desktop cd installation issue is available
[1]. This response is not valid for the alternate cd installation
issues.
