Does the preferred installer technology vary by OS version? My
understanding is that building a good old-fashioned installer is a great
lowest common denominator but that Vista (for example) users expected
fancier stuff.

IDE integration is a tricky one. I can see the case for it being in the
standard installer, particularly VS support, but more IDEs have their
own add-on technology that more appropriate as a deployment & upgrade
technology.
