2009/8/14 Alexander Belchenko <bialix@xxxxxxx>:Hi, I was the man who start building installers in the 2006 and did it till 2008. Several times I've heard complains about difference between standalone bzr.exe installer and python-based installation. Several times I've seen in Bazaar Sprint Notes that core bzr devs want to throw away standalone bzr.exe distribution and only provides python-based ones.I've never said that, and I understand why it's not possible to just drop the python-based installer.
I don't said I've heard it from you directly, but I've seen something like that in Sprint Notes. Can't find the original text though, so I can admit that may be I have false memory.
What I have said is that having to choose between them confuses some users, and that some users are not well served by either of them, such as people who want the all-in-one installer and then later want to install loggerhead.
It's problem, but it should be addressed from both sides: better install doc for Loggerhead will help here as well.
In other words I agree with your mail aside from that sentence :-) I'm wondering if Python eggs or easy_setup would be a good alternative to the python based installers. I know Robert dislikes them, I think primarily because they introduce yet another packaging system. But perhaps they are the best option for that case.
I don't like eggs too (in fact I'm hate them because they are one-way road).
