Lionel is right, initially there was only a single trunk branch for the doc, but this changed with the release of 6.0.
Unfortunately the split of the branches was not correctly done, with this as one of the consequences.

Currently we have no "trunk" as there is not much doc specific to the 6.1/trunk series. As a result, I changed the series to reflect the current status: one 6.0 series, one 5.0 series, and no trunk. The current dev focus is now changed to the 6.0 series, so any checkout of the doc without an explicit branch will give you the 6.0 branch now. This may cause issues for people that were using such a checkout, because it used to refer to the 5.0 branch.
But I think it's a minor problem and a clean cut is better, otherwise we'll drag this problem along forever.

I'm not sure it makes a lot of sense to have a "trunk" series right now,
because most people only care about improving the 6.0 doc, and trunk
would be confusing or useless. As soon as we start providing a lot of
doc specific to 6.1 it will make sense to branch off 6.0 a new 6.1 or
trunk branch.
