I tried to reproduce it but I don't have this bug.

Which action did you choose for the left click in the config panel? With
"Show desktop" and "Show desklet", the icon should change. Do you see
this change after having done the first left click?

Can you give us the output of this command:
  $ cairo-dock -l debug --colors | sed -n "/showDesktop\// {N;p;}"

And also this one (if it's possible only the messages that you have just after having click for the first time on this applet)
  $ cairo-dock -l debug

Bug description:
  This is a minor quibble.

  When "Appear on Click" is chosen, the "Show Desktop" icon (unlike the
  launchers) no longer responds to a single click, but behaves like the
  sub-menus, requiring two clicks.
