If we admit it's hard to understand, then it's practically impossible
for average users to understand, and features that are so difficult to
understand /are/ wrong when they're included in Ubuntu, even if their
developers intended the features to be that way. The Compiz Show Desktop
plugin is nice, but would require a bit more planning and development
(it doesn't play nice with the window list). Here's a simple set of
rules that the Show Desktop button should observe.

when ("Show Desktop" is clicked):
    if (all windows are minimized):
        unminimize all windows
    else:
        minimize all windows

The visual indication of a modal state should also be removed.
