[Bug 419358] [NEW] compiz shows empty desktop in 9.04 amd64

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Symptoms: after logging in, compiz does not start and my desktop is
reverted to metacity. If I force it to start, e.g. using compiz
--replace, I'm only seeing an empty screen showing the background image
(not a a black screen). I think the windows are actually hidden
underneath the background image, because the mouse pointer will change
into an insertion cursor if I hover over certain areas of the screen. I
can make compiz work if I use indirect rendering, which I'm not sure I
can safely use if I start opening large numbers of windows (I could
easily have more than 50 windows opened on my desktop). I haven't tried
this yet, however.

I'm running:
lsb_release -rd
Description:	Ubuntu 9.04
Release:	9.04

on an amd64 bits laptop configured like so: Linux 2.6.28-15-generic
#49-Ubuntu

with the following display controller (lspci -vv -nn):
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile GME965/GLE960 Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2a12] (rev 0c)
	Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:3618]
	Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx+
	Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- INTx-
	Latency: 0
Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 2297
	Region 0: Memory at e4400000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1M]
	Region 2: Memory at d0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
	Region 4: I/O ports at 4000 [size=8]
	Capabilities: <access denied>

direct rendering is enabled (glxinfo | grep render):
unhandled buffer attach event, attacment type 7
unhandled buffer attach event, attacment type 7
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 965GME/GLE GEM 20090326 2009Q1 RC2

My display uses dual screens made of the native laptop flat panel
(1280x800) and an external 20" display Dell 2005 fpw (1680x1050 native
resolution).

The device section of my xorg.conf file is as follows:
Section "Device"
	Identifier	"Configured Video Device"
	Option "AccelMethod" "UXA"
	Driver "intel"
	VideoRam 261120
	Option "EXAOptimizeMigration" "true"
	Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
	Option "Tiling" "true"
EndSection

However I've tried as well with lots of variations around this (i.e.
with/wo AccelMethod, w/wo driver id, w/wo VideoRam, w/wo the 3 "Option"
statements).

Here is the output of compiz --replace:
