Sorry, I'm feeling stupid now! I was thinking more along the lines of
AWN, Cairo-Dock and such.
I still think this change should be reverted, though. It doesn't work
well when the dock is set to autohide (and can make for some truly weird
colour clashes if you set the dock to "transparent", since gnome-panels
aren't truly transparent but a screenshot of your desktop).
And what's the point of it, even if the dock _isn't_ set to autohide?
Imagine a window taking up half your screen, for example. Half of the
dock would be shadowed - and the other half wouldn't. It's inconsistent
and seems somehow unnatural, as though the laws of physics had been
broken.
Well, at least that's my take on it. Thanks for taking the time to work
some more on it!
