[Bug 432160] [NEW] xv causes slow desktop, no xv causes slow playback

Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu Karmic 9.10, all updates through Thursday September 17, 2009.
When playing a video in totem or vlc, with xv the video plays smoothly but the rest of the desktop seems to be responding very slowly, no other applications will open until I either pause the video or close totem or vlc. Without xv the desktop seems to respond well but the video plays back jittery and very corrupted (ie scanlines running down the image). This didn't seem to be an issue before a couple of days ago, I believe an update to compiz is when this began. I've checked the log files, but I don't see anything that would be causing this. If I switch the window manager to metacity, both with and without xv function but don't have the same quality as compiz if played stretched, in fact they look awful.
My specs are:
Asus M3A78-CM
AMD Phenom x3 2.10 GHz
ATI Radeon HD 3100
4 GB RAM

** Affects: compiz (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
