Message #03511
[Bug 459449] [NEW] compiz wrapper command is not verbose enough
Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: compiz
The compiz wrapper command does not explain why it is unable to start
when it calls abort_with_fallback_wm.
Example:
If gnome is running in failsafe mode and GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID is set to "Failsafe", the command will silently explain that it falls back to metacity.
A better usage scenario would be something like:

#> compiz
You are currently running gnome in FAILSAFE mode, which hinders gnome from enabling desktop effects.
Disable failsafe GNOME by logging out and changing your SESSION.
Falling back too /usr/bin/metacity

This should also be shown (or similar) when attempting to enable desktop
effects in the "appearance" settings dialog.
A couple of other states are possible which disables desktop effects and
silently fails:
* ! running_under_whitelisted_driver || have_blacklisted_pciid
* ! check_tfp || ! check_npot_texture || ! check_composite || ! check_texture_size
* check_software_rasterizer
* check_nvidia && ! check_nvidia_memor
* ! check_fbconfig
I am quite an experienced linux user, and it took me some source code
scanning to figure out that running failsafe mode was my problem. : P
