Updates to the proprietary nvidia drivers will help.  Also, updates to
the kernel will also help.  On my Fedora 11 system (no compiz), the
flickers happened fairly frequently (a few times a day), but over the
summer, it reduced to at most once a week and there was no upgrade to
the proprietary drivers.  I have no clue how well the noveau team is
doing with their open-source drivers.
