[Bug 485077] [NEW] Unknown compiz setting appears to affect GNOME session management

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Release: Karmic
Version: 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu2

Simply put, using a standard install of Ubuntu 9.10, GNOME, and Compiz,
everything seems fine. However, when I imported an (admittedly rather
old) profile into compiz, in the hopes of reducing the workload of
configuring it, I ran into problems. At first, everything worked fine.
Some settings weren't in my old profile, so I turned them on manually,
and all was well...until I logged out. Upon logging back in, Compiz is
turned off and I couldn't access the right-click menu on the desktop,
although the normal wallpaper was still there. Deleting .gnome2,
.gnome2_private, .gconf, and .gconfd and then logging back in brought it
back to normal. I note that Compiz IS turned on by default, and that its
internal Session Manager is on. I note that I had LXDE and related
programs installed at one point; these caused various problems, such as
PCManFM taking over my GNOME "Places" menu. I have since purged LXDE,
etc. off of my system, but I mention it for completeness. I should also
mention that I have a few "experimental" plugins that are probably
rather old, but as they seem to work, I never thought to try and update
them (Cube Atlantis, Cube Models, Freewins, ScreenSaver, Snow,
Stackswitch; these were obtained about the same time, apparently around
January of 2009. They worked just fine in Intrepid. I am attaching my
profile settings after customization, in hopes that it will be useful. I
should also note that when everything is acting up like this, htop seems
to indicate multiple copies of certain processes, such as the keyring
daemon, etc. Perhaps the sessions aren't being saved properly somehow? I
should note that prior to importing this profile, I can log in and out
and do whatever and it works just fine.
