Not sure whether the pile of data attached to the original report has
anything useful in it, but moments after I sent it, my Xorg crashed on
an attempt to use gnome-volume-control:

  gnome-volume-control: Fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on
X server :0.0.

The problem I have just reported has disappeared in the new session: the
hot corners work again whether or not they are overlapped by windows.

The server had been running for about two weeks before it crashed; maybe
the problem was not in compiz, after all.
